Web Analytics
A guy just started on his session on “Web Analytics”. Hari, Mureli and I were playing the bouncers, as in standing next to the door and opening it every time someone knocks it. Then I would go about giving the intruder a cold look, which would kindle the deepest roots of guilt, for being late to the session and disturbing the others.
Speaker: What is web analytics?
Hari (to me): What is web analytics?
[audience giving some weak answers from here and there]
Me: Well, it is about the traffic, stats, referrers, search engine terms, out lin…
Speaker: Web links, referrers, traffic sources, stats, out links…
[I raise my eye brows in pride giving Hari the see-I-knew-it-already look]
Speaker: That is NOT web analytics… it is something more bigger than that…
Damal! Gone! Super flop….
I seem to be super clueless of what ever is going on in here at SearchCamp. These guys talk in code words, P4P, PPC, SEM, SEO bla bla.
Me: What is the difference between SEO and SEM?
Bandha A: SEO, i.e. search engine optimization is all about helping the search engine identify your site by doing integration of optimal mix of keywords to create a reliable and consistent higher rate of return and SEM i.e. search engine marketing is about increasing your ROI by managing asset allocation and maximizing the conversion of keywords into revenue.
Me: That is interesting…
Bandha B: Do a Google search, the stuff on the left is SEO and the stuff on the right is SEM.
Me: Woah! That simple is it? I bet Bandha A is a MBA grad.

Until Google and Yahoo hijacked “SEM” to mean PPC, the industry used it to include any form of marketing that leverages search engines. This includes SEO, PPC, P4P, paid per post, etc etc.

The Terms really didnt make sense for anyone.
Only thing which was really fun was the post-lunch events of day 2 and the networking party!
